Moles are rarely seen alive above ground. They are found in most habitats
where the soil is deep enough to enable the mole to construct its elaborate
tunneling systems and has an abundance of its earthworms it main food source.
Therefore it is uncommon on moorlands and on grassland on shallow soils
such as those in parts of the Dales.
Whilst moles are rarely seen themselves, their presence can be recorded by their distinctive molehills.
